Video Transcript

In this video, we’re addressing a deeply troubling issue that has emerged at Miss Hall’s School, a prestigious all-female boarding school in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Founded in 1898, Miss Hall’s was meant to be a place for learning and growth for young women. However, recent revelations have cast a shadow over its legacy.

As of today, multiple lawsuits have surfaced accusing former teacher Matthew Rutledge of sexually abusing students over decades. These courageous students, now adults, are coming forward with claims of grooming, exploitation, and sexual assault that had allegedly occurred during their time at school.

At least five women have initiated legal claims against Rutledge and the school’s administration, accusing them of creating an environment that allowed such abuses to persist unchecked. The school’s administration is under scrutiny for allegedly ignoring multiple reports about Rutledge’s misconduct from as early as 1994. Despite these warnings, it appears little was done to protect these students.

The impact of these allegations extends beyond individual claims. They’ve sparked a broader conversation about accountability and safeguarding students in educational settings. If you or someone you know experienced sexual abuse while at Miss Hall’s, you have legal rights and options. You can report the abuse to law enforcement for a criminal investigation, state oversight agencies, and may be able to pursue a civil lawsuit to seek accountability and compensation for the harm you endured.

Taking action can be daunting, but Helping Survivors is here to help you take the next best step forward.
