Who Qualifies for A Rhode Island Clergy Abuse Settlement?
A new two-year revival window for child sexual abuse lawsuits in Rhode Island has allowed victims to file previously time-barred claims. Dozens of lawsuits were filed on the first day of the window alone, most alleging abuse by clergy members of the Rhode Island Catholic Church.
The lawsuits also accuse the church of a civil conspiracy to conceal abuse and protect its reputation, sacrificing children’s safety. The cases filed so far involve abuse as far back as the 1970s and as recently as 2010 at churches, religious schools, and more across Rhode Island.
Anyone who experienced sexual abuse at the hands of a Rhode Island clergy member as a minor may qualify to file a clergy abuse lawsuit and potentially recover a settlement. Clergy sexual abuse can include:
- Sexual assault and abuse, such as rape, sodomy, fondling, and forced kissing
- Sexual exploitation
- Sexual harassment
- Exposure
- Taking and distributing sexual pictures or videos
- Exchanging sex for privileges or demanding sex to maintain them
What is the Deadline to File a Lawsuit for Rhode Island Clergy Sexual Abuse?
In June 2026, Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee signed a law expanding the state’s statute of limitations rules for childhood sexual abuse claims. The law includes a two-year revival window that begins July 1, 2026, and ends June 30, 2028. During that period, eligible victims may be able to bring certain civil lawsuits against individuals, institutions, organizations, or other parties connected to alleged childhood sexual abuse, including clergy members.
