Rock River Academy Abuse Allegations
Video Transcript
In this video, we are discussing Rock River Academy – a place meant for healing but instead resulted in more trauma and harm to the young girls in its care.
The Rock River Academy in Illinois was a juvenile detention center that was shut down in 2016 after an investigation revealed pervasive sexual abuse, runaways from the program being sex trafficked at high rates, and psychotropic drugs being administered at high rates to those in the program’s care.
In 2014, an investigation by the Chicago Tribune brought to light over 700 police reports of sexual and physical abuse happening over a four year period at Rock River Academy. The allegations included rape, sexual assault, and even sex trafficking—painting a harrowing picture of what was occurring in the facility.
These young girls, often given alcohol and drugs by staff in exchange for sexual favors, found themselves in unimaginable situations, manipulated and abused under the guise of care. The investigation found over two dozen young girls who were reportedly sex trafficked and coerced into prostitution after fleeing the facility.”
The facility, operated by Universal Health Services, a company running over 190 behavioral health facilities around the country, faces numerous lawsuits from those formerly incarcerated in youth detention facilities, including Rock River Academy.
These lawsuits accuse the organization of failing to adequately screen staff and of neglecting to take decisive action to address and report incidents of physical and sexual abuse – especially those incidents perpetrated by staff members.
If you or someone you know endured abuse at Rock River Academy, you have rights and options. While the facility is now closed, you can still report individual perpetrators to law enforcement to start a criminal investigation. We understand that those impacted may be very hesitant to report given the abuse was perpetrated by those within law enforcement and the juvenile incarceration system.
You may also be able to file a lawsuit against UHS and other relevant third parties to seek monetary compensation for the harm that happened to you. In Illinois, survivors of child sexual abuse generally have 20 years from the date they turn 18—their 38th birthday—to file a civil lawsuit. However, the sooner you file the stronger your case may be given evidence and witness availability.
