Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall Abuse: Rights and Options
Video Transcript
The troubling saga of widespread abuse at Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall in Los Angeles County, has recently come to light, stirring action and outcry from the public and those impacted.
Recent lawsuits reveal a disturbing pattern of sexual abuse suffered by hundreds of detainees. With nearly 600 former minor detainees stepping forward, the scope of these allegations has prompted a legal and societal reckoning.
Opened in 1957, Los Padrinos was intended as a rehabilitation center for youth. However, the intended path of reform turned dark with multiple allegations of physical and sexual assault emerging over the years. Notable among these is a massive lawsuit involving claims of systemic abuse that rocked the facility, leading to calls for its closure and reform.
Survivors and advocates have rallied, demanding accountability and change. Their efforts have led to significant legal battles, with Los Angeles County now facing potential payouts estimated between $1.6 and $3 billion to resolve these claims.
On February 15, 2024 – the state ruled that the facility may be shut down given the major issues and citing the facility, along with the Barry J. Nidorf Secure Youth Treatment Facility, were “unsuitable” to house youth detainees.
However, in April 2024, this decision was reversed citing both facilities passed recent state inspections — although the future of Los Padrinos still remains unclear as further reports of abuse and unfit facilities are being reported.
