A new lawsuit filed in Pierce County Superior Court has brought to light disturbing allegations of physical and sexual abuse at the Northwest ICE Processing Center in Tacoma, a facility run by the private contractor GEO Group. The lawsuit, filed on behalf of three men, describes a series of violent incidents involving guards, including groping, excessive force, and humiliation.
According to the lawsuit, these incidents are not isolated but part of a broader pattern of misconduct at the detention center. The three plaintiffs, who come from the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Bahamas, and Nigeria, claim they were subjected to mistreatment while detained under the Biden administration. They are seeking monetary damages and accountability for the alleged abuses.
Abuse, Cover-Ups, and Failure to Investigate
In the first incident, a detainee, referred to as “R.T.,” claims that a guard groped him during a search outside the view of surveillance cameras. Despite reporting the abuse, the lawsuit alleges that both Tacoma police and GEO Group failed to take appropriate action, with GEO’s internal investigation finding no wrongdoing.
Another detainee, identified as Javon Gordon, alleges that guards slammed him to the floor and injured him during a confrontation. The suit claims that after the assault, he was stripped in front of a female officer, and a video was allegedly recorded for training purposes. Gordon also claims that despite his complaints, no investigation was conducted, and he was instead blamed for the incident.
The third plaintiff, Jeffersonking Anyanwu, describes an incident in which he was violently attacked by guards after a verbal exchange. The guards allegedly slammed his head to the floor and left him with severe injuries. Like the other two plaintiffs, Anyanwu faced administrative charges that were later dismissed.
GEO Group's Response and Ongoing Concerns
The private contractor GEO Group has faced numerous allegations over the years regarding its treatment of detainees. Despite the company’s defense that it adheres to rigorous standards, these new claims add to a growing list of complaints about conditions at the facility. The University of Washington Center for Human Rights reported a significant number of sexual abuse and assault allegations at the Tacoma detention center, yet investigations have often been cursory or dismissed.
In light of these ongoing concerns, the lawsuit argues that GEO and ICE are responsible for fostering an environment of abuse and neglect, putting detainees at risk while failing to ensure their safety and well-being.
A Call for Justice and Accountability
The plaintiffs in this lawsuit are not only seeking justice for the physical harm they endured but also accountability for the failure of the Tacoma facility’s staff and oversight. The abuse, humiliation, and neglect described in the lawsuit illustrate the urgent need for legal action and institutional reform to protect individuals detained in federal facilities.
