A Raleigh mother has filed a $50 million civil lawsuit against Lyft following an alleged sexual assault during a ride home from work. The legal filing in Durham County, North Carolina, alleges that the rideshare giant bears corporate responsibility for permitting an unfit driver onto its platform and connecting him with unsuspecting passengers.
The survivor, identified as Diamond Cannady, a mother of five, hired a ride on March 31, expecting a safe trip home. Instead, according to court documents, the driver detoured to a secluded area where the incident occurred.
The Incident and Criminal Charges Filed in Raleigh Case
According to court documents and arrest warrants filed by the Raleigh Police Department, Cannady requested a ride home from work on the evening of March 31. Rather than taking her home, driver Ryan James Davey allegedly drove her to a secluded location, restrained her unlawfully, exposed himself, grabbed her face, and forcibly kissed her without her consent.
Law enforcement officers responded and apprehended Davey the following day. Police records indicate that officers found an open container of alcohol inside the vehicle during the arrest. Davey was subsequently charged with several offenses, including:
- Felony kidnapping
- Sexual battery
- Indecent exposure
- Driving while impaired (DWI)
- Resisting a public officer
Attorneys representing Cannady revealed that Davey had a prior criminal record, including a 2015 DWI conviction, before Lyft approved him to operate as a driver on its platform. Davey remains in custody as his criminal proceedings move forward.
