Pennsylvania Woman Files Lyft Sexual Assault Lawsuit Over Alleged Driver Misconduct

A Pennsylvania woman has filed a federal lawsuit against Lyft Inc., alleging she was sexually assaulted by a rideshare driver during a trip arranged through the Lyft app. The complaint was filed June 5 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California by a woman identified as Jane SL104. Lyft is named as the sole defendant in the case.

According to the lawsuit, Jane SL104 requested a Lyft ride on February 26, 2025, to travel from a friend’s home to her son’s school. During the ride, the driver allegedly pulled over after claiming there was an issue with the vehicle’s tire pressure. The complaint claims the stop led to an assault that left the plaintiff with physical injuries and lasting emotional harm.

What the Lawsuit Alleges Happened During the Ride

The complaint alleges that the driver first made Jane SL104 uncomfortable by asking personal and inappropriate questions. The lawsuit claims the driver then stopped the vehicle, briefly got out, and returned by entering the back seat where the passenger was sitting.

Jane SL104 alleges the driver touched her without consent and blocked or limited her ability to safely leave the situation. The complaint states that she resisted, screamed, and eventually escaped from the vehicle. She claims she suffered visible injuries to her legs, along with emotional distress, panic, anxiety, humiliation, and other psychological impacts connected to the alleged incident.

For many survivors, rideshare-related sexual assault can feel especially frightening because it may happen in a confined vehicle, away from familiar people or places. These cases can also raise difficult questions about platform safety, driver screening, reporting systems, and what rights a passenger may have after an assault.

Lyft Safety Practices Are Central to the Complaint

The lawsuit does not only focus on the conduct of the individual driver. Jane SL104 also alleges that Lyft knew for years that some passengers had reported sexual misconduct by drivers, yet did not adopt adequate safety measures to reduce the risk of future harm.

According to the complaint, Lyft allegedly continued to use inadequate driver screening procedures, declined to require fingerprint-based background checks, and did not effectively monitor rides despite having access to GPS and other technology. The lawsuit also claims Lyft misrepresented the safety of its platform through public statements and advertising that emphasized passenger safety.

The complaint further alleges that Lyft mishandled some sexual assault reports by failing to fully cooperate with investigations, restricting access to complaints, deactivating victims’ accounts, or using reporting procedures that discouraged survivors from continuing with complaints.

The lawsuit brings claims including negligence, failure to warn, negligent hiring and supervision, misrepresentation, common carrier negligence, and product liability. It seeks compensatory and punitive damages.

Case Joins Growing Rideshare Sexual Assault Litigation

Jane SL104’s lawsuit is part of a broader wave of rideshare sexual assault litigation involving passengers who allege they were harmed by drivers using app-based transportation platforms.

More than 50 Lyft sexual assault lawsuits are pending in federal court, where claims have been centralized before U.S. District Judge Rita F. Lin in the Northern District of California for coordinated pretrial proceedings. Plaintiffs in the Lyft litigation generally allege the company failed to implement adequate passenger safety precautions and misled riders about platform safety.

Bellwether trials do not decide every case. However, they can help both sides understand how juries may view evidence, damages, and legal arguments in similar claims.

What Rideshare Sexual Assault Survivors May Want to Know

After an alleged rideshare sexual assault, survivors may have several options. Some people choose to report the incident to law enforcement. Others may report the incident through the rideshare app, seek medical care, connect with counseling resources, preserve screenshots or ride receipts, or speak with a civil attorney about possible legal claims.

There is no single “right” next step for every survivor. Some people act immediately. Others need time before they are ready to talk about what happened. A survivor’s timeline is personal, and support should not depend on whether the incident happened recently or years ago.

Civil lawsuits may allow victims to seek compensation for physical injuries, therapy costs, emotional distress, lost income, and other losses, depending on the facts and applicable law. In cases involving companies, lawsuits may also examine whether policies, screening systems, reporting procedures, or safety tools were adequate.

Speaking with a trauma-informed legal professional can help survivors understand their rights and resources without pressure to make a decision before they are ready.
