Union County Juvenile Detention Center Sex Abuse Lawsuit
Video Transcript
The Union County Juvenile Detention Center in Linden, New Jersey, closed in 2019. Before its closure, the facility faced allegations of pervasive physical and sexual abuse. Survivors have started to come forward more and more, alleging county officials failed to protect them from predatory staff members. In one case, a guard was accused of repeatedly assaulting a 17-year-old inmate over 9 months. The officer eventually plead guilty to criminal charges, but survivors say the abuse was known to staff and ignored. The facility also had one of the worst records for improper room restrictions, locking youth in cells for nearly 24 hours a day, often against state law. Survivors of Union County detention abuse have legal rights and options, and we’re here to help you understand them.
In New Jersey, childhood sexual abuse lawsuits can be filed until a survivor’s 55th birthday, and there are no criminal statute of limitations for the most serious sexual offenses. This means you may be able to file a civil lawsuit against the institution for the harm you endured and can file a police report at any time to launch a criminal investigation into individual perpetrators. Here at Helping
Survivors, we can connect individuals with experienced attorneys who can help explain your options and help you understand these processes in a free confidential consultation. Every law firm we work with takes these types of cases on contingency, meaning there are no upfront costs to pursuing a claim. Please reach out to us today so you can take the next best step forward.
