Attorneys have filed lawsuits against DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital, its parent company Tenet Health, and Wilfredo Figueroa-Berrios, a nurse charged with sexual assault. The lawsuits were announced during a press conference on Wednesday, where the attorneys detailed the disturbing allegations involving the nurse and the hospital’s role in allowing him to continue working despite red flags.
Allegations Against the Accused Nurse
Wilfredo Figueroa-Berrios, 47, was arraigned on new charges last Saturday related to the sexual assault of a 31-year-old woman who was a patient at Sinai-Grace Hospital in Detroit, MI. The assault allegedly occurred on August 12, while the woman was under care at the hospital. Figueroa-Berrios is facing charges of third-degree criminal sexual conduct in this case and several others, with at least seven additional victims believed to be involved.
Hospital and Parent Company Named in Lawsuits
The lawsuits target both DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital and its parent company, Tenet Health. Attorneys allege that the hospital failed in its responsibility to protect its patients from harm and allowed Figueroa-Berrios to continue his work despite multiple warning signs. The hospital’s actions (or lack thereof) allowed a dangerous predator to remain in a position where he could abuse vulnerable patients.
Legal Battle Intensifies Amid Accusations and Defense
Figueroa-Berrios, who has been a licensed nurse since 2012, is currently in custody. His defense attorney has made public statements questioning the credibility of the accusers. During an arraignment in September, they claimed that the alleged victims were intoxicated or suffering from mental illness and accused the media of encouraging more victims to come forward.
Despite the defense’s claims, the number of victims continues to grow, and the community remains outraged over the circumstances that allowed the nurse to continue working in such a vulnerable setting.
