NJ Doctor Arrested for Sexually Assaulting Patient During Medical Exam

Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella has announced the arrest of 68-year-old Richard B. Tancer from Montville, NJ, on charges of sexual assault following an investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Little Ferry Police Department. Tancer, a doctor, is accused of sexually assaulting an adult female patient during an examination at the Family Medical Group in Little Ferry, NJ, on July 18, 2025.

Investigation and Charges

The Little Ferry Police Department reported the alleged assault to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office on the same day. Authorities discovered that Tancer had committed the assault while performing an examination on the victim. Based on the investigation, Tancer was charged with two counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual contact, a charge under New Jersey law.

Tancer was arrested at his home in Montville, NJ, and remanded to the Bergen County Jail. He is awaiting a first appearance in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack, NJ.

Prosecutor Musella emphasized that the charges are only accusations, and Tancer is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. He thanked the Little Ferry Police Department for their cooperation in the investigation.
