What is Voyeurism & What to Do if it Happens to You
Video Transcript
What is voyeurism? And what can you do if you experience this serious violation of privacy?
Voyeurism involves the act of secretly watching or recording others as they undress, are naked, or engage in private activities, generally for the sexual gratification of the viewer.
This invasive behavior is a crime in many jurisdictions, particularly when it infringes on the expectation of personal privacy. For example, recently the media has reported on the epidemic of hidden cameras found in bathrooms and bedrooms of AirBnBs – with over 35,000 known complaints filed.
Other times, you may realize someone is watching you through a window or find a hidden camera in your workplace bathroom.
If you witness an act of voyeurism, your safety is paramount. In public spaces like gyms or stores, immediately inform a staff member. If alone, it’s advisable to call 911 as the individual engaging in voyeurism may harm you if they are caught in the act.
Experiencing or witnessing voyeurism can be traumatic. Seeking support from mental health professionals can help you cope with any distress.
It’s also important to discuss age-appropriate conduct with children, educating them on what to do if someone tries to invade their privacy by asking to watch them undress, bathe, or engage in other behavior for the gratification of someone else. For example, a teacher or babysitter could be engaging voyeuristic acts and if a child does not realize this is not appropriate behavior, will not know to tell you.
