California Pastor Arrested for Viewing Child Sex Abuse Material

California Pastor Arrested for Having Child Sex Abuse Material

Jeffrey Williams Zabel, the pastor of worship and service production at Arbor Road Church (ARC) in Long Beach, California, was arrested on September 9, 2025, after admitting to viewing child sex abuse material for more than a decade. The 50-year-old pastor, who also served as a part-time music and choir teacher at Lakewood Christian Schools (LCS), was charged with one count of possession of child pornography.

Church’s Response and Zabel’s Resignation

According to church officials, Zabel disclosed his “long-term moral failure” during a meeting with church leaders on September 9, where he resigned from his role at ARC and was removed from his position at LCS. The church leaders expressed deep sadness, frustration, and disappointment over the situation, confirming they had accepted his resignation promptly.

In a letter to the congregation, ARC leaders emphasized their commitment to supporting Zabel’s family, including his wife and three daughters, during this difficult time.

Investigation and Legal Actions

The investigation into Zabel’s actions is ongoing, with the police having taken him into custody after his confession. Zabel was released on his own recognizance the following day. The church and school have since removed his profiles from their websites, and leaders have vowed to cooperate fully with law enforcement as the investigation progresses.

This case highlights the importance of accountability within institutions and the need for greater vigilance in protecting vulnerable individuals from exploitation.
