Video Transcript

New Jersey’s only women’s prison, the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility, has faced widespread abuse allegations for decades. Dozens of staff members have been convicted of sexually and physically abusing inmates, and the state has faced lawsuits from countless survivors. In 2021, after violent incidents and years of complaints, the US Department of Justice stepped in, placing Edna Mahan under federal oversight. That same year, New Jersey settled 22 lawsuits for nearly $21 million, compensating the women who endured or were placed at risk of abuse while imprisoned there. Despite these steps, survivors continue to come forward.

If you or a loved one were abused at Edna Mahan, you have legal rights and options. First, you can file a police report to start a criminal investigation and may also be able to file a civil lawsuit against the institution and oversight agencies to pursue accountability and compensation. Here at Helping Survivors, we can connect individuals with experienced attorneys for a free confidential consultation to help you explore your options so you can take the next best step forward.
