Uber Faces Lawsuit Over Negligence in Rideshare Driver Safety

A federal lawsuit filed in Nashville, Tennessee, claims Uber’s negligence in safeguarding its drivers led to the sexual assault of a female driver. The lawsuit, filed after an incident that took place on Sept. 8, 2024, accuses Uber of failing to provide important safety information, including withholding risk assessments of riders that could have helped the driver make informed safety decisions.

Allegations of Negligence and Inadequate Safety Measures

In the lawsuit, the female driver describes how she was assaulted by a rider smelling of alcohol, who sat in the front seat of her car and sexually assaulted her during the ride. The complaint argues that Uber’s classification of drivers as independent contractors allowed the company to avoid providing essential protections, including health benefits, training, and oversight. Additionally, the lawsuit claims that Uber failed to mandate the use of in-car cameras, which could help deter and document sexual assault incidents.

The plaintiffs further claim that Uber’s current policies and practices prioritize growth over safety, citing the company’s reluctance to share vital information about riders’ backgrounds, which could help drivers assess risks before accepting rides.

These sentiments are echoed in the New York Times exposé of Uber, which was published in August 2025, and the Uber sexual assault MDL currently underway.

The Push for Structural Change and Accountability

The lawsuit calls for significant changes to Uber’s business model and demands that the company provide better protection for its drivers. It also seeks compensation for the emotional trauma, medical expenses, and lost wages suffered by the plaintiff. The plaintiffs argue that Uber must fulfill its promise to provide a safe environment for its drivers, especially women, who are at higher risk of assault in this line of work.

Uber has faced numerous similar lawsuits over the years, and the company has taken some steps to improve safety, such as adding female-only driver and passenger options. However, critics argue that these changes are insufficient, and that Uber’s business practices continue to leave drivers vulnerable to harm.
