A New Threat to Rideshare Safety: Fraudulent Accounts for Sale
A troubling new report has uncovered the existence of fraudulent Uber driver accounts for sale on Facebook, posing a growing risk to passenger safety. The Tech Transparency Project (TTP) discovered dozens of Facebook groups dedicated to buying and renting Uber, DoorDash, and other rideshare accounts, bypassing the companies’ thorough background checks and screening processes. These accounts, sold under false identities, allow unqualified individuals to drive unsuspecting passengers, endangering their safety.
According to TTP’s investigation, these black-market groups, with over 800,000 members, offer stolen, fake, or rented Uber driver accounts for as low as $65. Facebook groups like “Uber Delivery Drivers Account for Rent” have made it easy for people to acquire rideshare accounts without the necessary qualifications, including valid driver’s licenses or proof of vehicle insurance. This unregulated market enables individuals with questionable backgrounds to take advantage of vulnerable passengers.
The Dangers of Unscreened Drivers
The sale of fraudulent Uber accounts is not just a matter of financial loss for the rideshare companies—it also exposes passengers to a serious safety threat. These unauthorized drivers are able to evade the screening processes intended to protect passengers from dangerous individuals. Without the standard background checks that rideshare services like Uber require, these drivers may have history of abuse, criminal records, or even a lack of proper training.
As a result, passengers who rely on these services for convenience are unknowingly putting themselves at risk. This threat extends not only to adults but also to minors, who are vulnerable to assault and exploitation.
The Role of Social Media in Enabling Fraud
Social media platforms like Facebook, owned by Meta, have been criticized for enabling these fraudulent activities by allowing these groups to thrive. Despite Meta’s policies prohibiting the sale of fraudulent or illegal content, these groups remain active, offering rideshare accounts to anyone willing to pay. This lax enforcement not only allows criminal activity to flourish but also contributes to the wider safety and assault crisis within the rideshare industry.
