Key Takeaways
  • Wilfredo Figueroa-Berrios, a former Detroit-area nurse, is facing multiple criminal charges and civil lawsuits over the alleged sexual assaults of several patients from 2021 to 2025.
  • Attorneys for the alleged victims have stated that Figueroa-Berrios’ employer, Sinai-Grace Hospital, should have been aware of his past behavior during the hiring process and taken patient complaints more seriously.
  • If you or a loved one experienced sexual assault or misconduct by Wilfredo Figueroa-Berrios, you have legal rights and options for holding the responsible parties accountable.

Wilfredo Figueroa-Berrios, 47, was a nurse at Detroit Medical Center’s Sinai-Grace Hospital who was terminated in August following accusations of sexually assaulting patients. He has been charged with multiple counts of criminal sexual conduct involving alleged assaults on patients at Sinai-Grace, Trinity Health in Livonia, and more.

Attorneys believe he may have been involved in at least seven assaults while employed by Trinity and Detroit Medical Center’s Sinai-Grace Hospital.

Several alleged victims have also filed lawsuits against Sinai-Grace and its parent company, asserting that the hospital should have been aware of Figueroa-Berrios’ actions and should have conducted a more thorough screening process before hiring him.

Allegations of Sexual Abuse Against Wilfredo Figueroa-Berrios

According to court documents, Figueroa-Berrios had allegedly faced previous sexual assault allegations before his employment at Sinai-Grace Hospital in Detroit. Attorneys said Figueroa-Berrios was terminated from another hospital following multiple complaints of sexual misconduct. He was also previously arrested on assault charges in 2019 and had allegedly posted sexually suggestive content on his social media accounts, the attorneys said.

Counsel for the victims filed a lawsuit against Sinai-Grace and its parent company, Tenet Healthcare, saying the hospital should’ve known about the man’s earlier assaults before hiring him, and the subsequent assaults would have been prevented if the hospital had acted correctly.

In response, Sinai-Grace asserted that it has a rigorous screening process for prospective employees and a procedure for addressing patient concerns, which did not raise any red flags regarding Figueroa-Berrios.

October 2025

In October, another alleged sexual assault victim came forward against Wilfredo Figueroa-Berrios, filing a $150 million lawsuit against Sinai-Grace and its parent company. The lawsuit involves a July 2025 incident in which Figueroa-Berrios allegedly performed an unnecessary pap smear on a woman, drugged her with a sedative, and assaulted her for an hour. A rape kit later tested positive.

September 2025

In late September, a survivor filed a $100 million lawsuit against Sinai-Grace, asserting that the hospital and three staff members failed to protect her from sexual assault by Figueroa-Berrios in August 2025. The woman said that after she was admitted to the hospital, Figueroa-Berrios entered her room multiple times and assaulted her.

The lawsuit claims the victim reported the alleged assault to multiple hospital staff members, who dismissed her claims. She was also repeatedly denied access to a social worker or patient advocate. Additionally, the victim said that in retaliation for trying to report, the hospital refused to give her back her clothes or serve her meals.

Legal Rights and Options for Survivors of Wilfredo Figueroa-Berrios Abuse

In sexual assault cases, state prosecutors may pursue criminal charges against perpetrators depending on the facts and circumstances. However, survivors themselves also have the right to file a civil lawsuit against the perpetrator and any other party or institution whose negligence allowed the abuse to occur. A civil lawsuit can provide monetary compensation to victims for their suffering, medical expenses, and other related costs.

Report Sexual Abuse by Wilfredo Figueroa-Berrios to Law Enforcement

Reporting sexual assault to law enforcement is an important step for victims, as it can lead to criminal charges and consequences like prison time for the perpetrator. In Michigan, criminal statutes of limitations set deadlines for prosecutors to file charges against perpetrators.

The applicable time limits depend on the severity of offenses and whether the victim was a minor when the abuse occurred. There is no time limit for first-degree criminal sexual conduct charges involving an adult victim in Michigan, and the limit for second- through fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct charges is 10 years.

Figueroa-Berrios is already facing criminal charges in numerous cases, including the alleged sexual assault of a 41-year-old woman in Detroit in May 2025. Prosecutors have also charged Figueroa-Berrios with multiple counts of criminal sexual conduct in connection with an alleged sexual assault at Sinai-Grace in August.

Report to the Bureau of Professional Licensing in Michigan

In Michigan, the Bureau of Professional Licensing receives complaints from patients, citizens, and mandated reporters that can lead to investigations into licensed health care professionals who may be violating the law. The BPL encourages all concerned citizens, patients, and licensed health professionals to file a complaint if they are aware of behavior that violates the Public Health Code. After receiving a complaint, the BPL will investigate it and, if necessary, refer it to another state agency or entity if it falls outside its jurisdiction.

File a Civil Lawsuit

When filing a civil lawsuit for sexual assault, survivors may be able to take legal action against the hospital itself and its parent companies, not just the perpetrator, for negligently failing to protect patients from predatory staff. However, civil lawsuits have time limits, called “statutes of limitations,” that only give survivors a certain amount of time after the assault to file.

In Michigan, the civil statute of limitations for sexual assault varies depending on the severity of the crime and the victim’s age. The current statute of limitations for filing a civil adult sexual assault lawsuit in Michigan is 10 years from the date of the assault.
