Doctor Sexual Assault: Support for Those Impacted
Patients put a lot of trust in their health care professionals. Unfortunately, some doctors betray that trust and take advantage of people when they’re most vulnerable. Victims of sexual assault may not even know they’ve been abused because they believe their doctor is acting in their best interests.
Examples of Doctor Sexual Assault
Doctor sexual assault or abuse can take several forms. Some instances of sexual misconduct may be more subtle, while others are physically aggressive. Some examples include the following:
- Performing unnecessary procedures or acts, such as touching unrelated body parts
- Making suggestive comments or sexual remarks
- Refusing to allow a chaperone or nurse to be present for an exam
- Pressuring patients to remove clothing unnecessarily for the exam
- Creating electronic images of sexual or intimate body parts without the patient’s knowledge or consent
- Touching a patient’s sexual or intimate body parts with no gloves
- Touching a patient’s sexual or intimate body parts through clothing
- Forcing a patient to perform sexual favors in exchange for services or medication
Recent Doctor Sexual Assault Cases
While there are strict standards governing health care practitioners in the United States, doctor sexual assault happens more frequently than you may think. Data from the United States National Practitioner Data Bank shows there were 974 disciplinary actions due to sexual misconduct against 862 physicians between January 2003 and September 2013.
The data represents a rate of 9.5 disciplinary actions for every 10,000 physicians in 10 years. However, the analysis does not include physicians who had complaints filed against them but did not receive state licensing disciplinary actions.
Recent and well-known cases against doctors include:
- New York urologist Dr. Darius Paduch was charged with sexually assaulting patients, including minors.
- Former gynecologist Dr. Robert Hadden was convicted of committing numerous acts of sexual abuse against his patients at Columbia University’s affiliated hospitals.
- UCLA gynecologist Dr. James Heaps was charged with sexual misconduct and other felony counts.
- New York doctor Dr. Zhi Alan Cheng was accused of sexually assaulting, drugging, and illegally recording them at his Queens practice.
- Obstetrician-gynecologist Dr. David Broadbent faced multiple allegations of sexual assault, professional misconduct, and harassment against patients.
