Abuse Allegations at Harborfields Youth Detention Facility
Video Transcript
Harborfields Youth Detention Facility in Atlantic County, New Jersey, is facing serious allegation that staff members subjected children to horrific sexual abuse, including rape, molestation, sedation, and violent threats. For decades, reports of abuse and misconduct have circulated. Allegations date far back as the 1970s, and in June 2025, six men came forward with lawsuits describing assaults they suffered there as teens in the 1990s and early 2000s. The lawsuits accuse Atlantic County of violating New Jersey’s Child Sex Abuse Act and failing to protect children in its custody through negligent hiring, training, and supervision.
Survivors of juvenile detention center abuse in New Jersey have legal options for civil lawsuits. Survivors of childhood sexual abuse generally have up until the age of 55 to five. Adult sexual assault claims must usually be filed within 7 years. Importantly, some survivors may be able to file lawsuits under pseudonyms keeping their identities confidential. If you were abused at Harborfields or another New Jersey detention facility, you can report the abuse to Division of Child Protection and Permanencies Institutional Abuse Investigation Unit by calling 1877 NJ abuse.
You can also file a complaint with the Juvenile Justice Commission’s Office of Investigations. Even if the abuse happened decades ago or if your abuser was never charged, you may still be able to file a civil lawsuit. In a civil case, survivors can seek compensation for pain and suffering, emotional distress, medical expenses, lost wages, and more. These lawsuits also hold institutions accountable for allowing the abuse to occur.
