Lyft Enhances Safety with New Features for Riders and Drivers

As of September 2025, Lyft is rolling out enhanced safety measures to protect passengers, including new tools such as real-time location sharing, audio recording, and more robust background checks. These tools aim to provide riders with greater control and security throughout their journey.

Previously, Lyft announced it would address gaps in its safety by rolling out a female-only driver option for female and nonbinary passengers called Women+ Connect. Additionally, Lyft introduced a feature to allow passengers to “block” or “favorite” drivers. Passengers have been calling for greater protections after a slew of sexual assault cases against Lyft and its competitor Uber

Introducing the five new features that passengers can use:

Ride Tracking and Location Sharing

Lyft riders can now share their trip details, including real-time location, with trusted contacts. This feature allows friends or family to track the ride as it progresses, ensuring someone is always aware of the rider’s whereabouts.

Audio Recording During Trips

For additional peace of mind, Lyft is rolling out an optional audio recording feature. Riders can choose to record their rides, which can provide crucial evidence in case of disputes or emergencies. This is an added layer of protection that aims to hold both drivers and passengers accountable.

Enhanced Background Checks

Lyft is strengthening its driver screening process, ensuring that drivers undergo more thorough background checks. This includes a more detailed review of criminal history and driving records to help ensure a safer experience for passengers.

Check-In and Emergency Assistance

Lyft now offers a feature where riders can schedule check-ins after their ride. In case a trip is delayed or unusual, the rider can receive automatic notifications, prompting them to check in for added security.

In-App Safety Features

Lyft also includes a streamlined process for reporting issues, with an easy-to-use in-app feature that lets riders quickly notify the company of any safety concerns, helping to address problems faster and more effectively.

Helping Survivors' Commitment to Rideshare Safety

While improved safety measures are a great start, Uber and Lyft are the subject of numerous rideshare lawsuits alleging their initial safety measures were not enough to protect passengers from harm. If you or someone you know has been affected by sexual assault as a rideshare passenger or as a rideshare driver, you may have the right to file a lawsuit.
