Lawsuit Against Lenape Regional High School District Following Teacher’s Alleged Sexual Abuse

Lawsuit Filed Against Lenape Regional High School District for Teacher's Alleged Sexual Abuse
A Burlington County woman has filed a lawsuit against the Lenape Regional High School District, alleging that the school failed to protect her from sexual abuse by a teacher. The case highlights the disturbing consequences of unchecked authority in educational settings and the responsibility of institutions to safeguard students.

The Alleged Abuse

The victim claims that when she was just 14 years old, Brantley Cesanek, her Latin teacher at Cherokee High School in Marlton, began grooming her for sexual abuse in 2014. The lawsuit, filed on January 14 in New Jersey Superior Court, alleges that Cesanek took advantage of his position of power, manipulating the student into a relationship that blurred boundaries and escalated into abusive behavior.

The teacher reportedly bought the student meals, removed her from school grounds for private encounters, and made inappropriate advances in the classroom. According to the suit, Cesanek also gave the student excessive hall passes, allowing her to spend more time with him than was appropriate. Despite several teachers being aware of Cesanek’s misconduct, no one reported it to authorities.

Cesanek's Arrest and Conviction

Cesanek was arrested in 2018, facing charges including sexual assault, endangering the welfare of a child, and official misconduct. In 2019, he pled guilty to second-degree endangering the welfare of a child and was sentenced to five years in prison. Cesanek’s teaching certificate was revoked following his conviction, but the damage caused to the victim is undeniable.

Failure of the School District

The lawsuit targets the Lenape Regional High School District, accusing the institution of failing to uphold its mission to develop physically and emotionally healthy students. It argues that the district’s negligence and lack of supervision allowed Cesanek to prey on a vulnerable student. The complaint also highlights systemic failures in the district’s oversight, pointing to another teacher in the district, Eric T. Howell, who was convicted of similar charges in 2019.

The lawsuit states that Cesanek’s grooming began after the student joined the school’s Latin Club, which provided him with increased access to her. He allegedly showered her with gifts, wrote her love letters, and made inappropriate comments, including expressing his desire for a sexual relationship once she turned 18. His actions escalated, and the abuse continued for years, even after the student left for college, where Cesanek reportedly stalked her.

Legal and Emotional Impact

This case underscores the emotional toll that sexual abuse has on survivors. The lawsuit outlines how the victim has suffered significant harm, including depression, nightmares, and a loss of self-esteem. The survivor’s story is a stark reminder of the ongoing struggles that many victims face, long after the abuse has ended.

As survivors of abuse, especially in institutions meant to protect and educate, navigate their paths to healing, it’s important to understand their rights and the legal options available to them.
