Dr. Fabio Ortega Sexual Abuse

Video Transcript

In March, 2024, the Washington Post reported that Dr. Fabio Ortega, a former Chicago-based OBGYN, allegedly sexually abused more than 300 patients during his time practicing. This included being able to practice unsupervised for more than a year while an ongoing police investigation was happening regarding two patients reporting that he sexually assaulted them. Fabio Ortega was sentenced in 2021 to three years imprisonment after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting those two patients. Lawyers representing the patient victims of Ortega claimed the abuse started as far back as 1989 with multiple reports to the medical institutions Ortega worked for. Lawsuits against Ortega for the abuse and reports were made to law enforcement throughout the years, however, Ortega was able to remain employed with seemingly no repercussions supervision or thorough investigations until his arrest in September, 2018. After his arrest, the hospitals he was employed by never notified patients. Like many doctor sexual abuse cases, patients did bravely come forward over many years, but their reports were not taken seriously.

Additionally, many former patients of Ortega are now coming forward. As like many doctor’s, sexual abuse victims they did not recognize at the time that they experienced abuse. Ortega allegedly preyed upon low income patients, immigrants who did not speak English and first time gynecologist patients who had no understanding of proper exam procedures. There are multiple lawsuits against Ortega and his previous employers, North Shore University Health System and Swedish Covenant Hospital, both now owned by Endeavor Health. If you were a patient of Dr. Fabio Ortega, you may be able to file a lawsuit against him and the medical institutions who employed him. Regardless of the statute of limitations, depending on the circumstances, speaking to an experienced law firm can help you understand your legal rights and options, including filing a complaint to seek monetary compensation for the harm that happened to you and so many others.
