In a significant case of child sexual abuse, 32-year-old Daniel Lara-Salazar, formerly stationed in Pallyup, Washington, pled guilty in federal court to sexually exploiting a minor on Snapchat. This case highlights the ongoing efforts to combat sexual exploitation, particularly in military contexts, and is part of the nationwide Project Safe Childhood initiative aimed at protecting children from sexual harm.
Details of the Crimes
Lara-Salazar used Snapchat to contact a minor female victim, who lived in Maryland, beginning in June 2024. Over a period of two months, he coerced the victim into sending explicit images and videos. These images were often sent via Snapchat’s disappearing messages feature, making them difficult to trace. Lara-Salazar also engaged in similar activities with three other minors across the United States, including Texas. The defendant’s actions were uncovered during a collaborative investigation led by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), and the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office.
Project Safe Childhood and Legal Consequences
This case forms part of the broader Project Safe Childhood initiative launched by the Department of Justice to address the growing issue of child sexual exploitation. The project marshals the resources of federal, state, and local authorities to locate offenders and protect victims. Lara-Salazar now faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years in prison, with a potential maximum sentence of 30 years, alongside lifetime supervised release and sex offender registration.
A U.S. Attorney along with law enforcement officials involved in the case, emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in safeguarding children and holding perpetrators accountable.
