Former Pastor Arrested on Multiple Charges of Sexual Abuse Involving a Juvenile

David A. Rodgers Allegations

David A. Rodgers, a 40-year-old man from Utica, Kentucky, was arrested on the evening of February 16 after Kentucky State Police launched an investigation into serious allegations involving a juvenile. Rodgers, a worship pastor at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Western Kentucky, faces several charges, including rape, sodomy, sexual abuse, procuring or promoting the use of a minor by electronic means, and possession of matter portraying sexual performance by a minor under the age of 12.

Rodger's Church Involvement

Rodgers had served as a pastor at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, where he held the position of worship pastor. It was through his position that he allegedly engaged in a sexual relationship with the victim. Upon learning of the allegations, the church took immediate action, removing Rodgers from the staff and barring him from participating in church activities. Pastor Brian Tillman expressed shock and sorrow over the news, stating that the church takes sexual assault allegations very seriously.

“We are deeply saddened and troubled by these allegations,” Tillman remarked. “We ask that you join us in prayerfully awaiting information regarding this ongoing legal matter.”

The Timeline of Abuse

The sexual abuse reportedly began 10 to 11 years ago when the victim, a minor connected to the church, was approximately 12 to 13 years old. The abuse is said to have lasted for four to five years. The case came to light in early January when someone with knowledge of the relationship came forward. During an interview with police, Rodgers allegedly admitted to the allegations.

Rodgers' Arrest and Legal Proceedings

Rodgers was initially held without bond but was released from the Daviess County Detention Center on February 17 after posting a $75,000 bond. He is prohibited from contacting children and must stay at least 500 feet from the victim, among other conditions.

He is facing multiple charges, including:

  • Two counts of third-degree rape
  • Two counts of second-degree sodomy (abuse involving a position of authority)
  • Two counts of first-degree sexual abuse
  • Procuring or promoting the use of a minor by electronic means
  • Possession of matter portraying sexual performance by a minor under 12

Church Response and Community Impact

Following Rodgers’ arrest, the church’s website was updated, and he was removed from the staff section. A screenshot taken from the website hours after his arrest revealed that Rodgers had been ordained since 2008 and had led the worship and creative arts ministry at the church.

The church community is left grappling with the news, as the allegations have shaken both the congregation and the local community. Church leaders have expressed ongoing support for survivors of sexual assault, acknowledging the pain and trauma that such news may cause.

“We understand that for sexual assault survivors, this may initiate feelings of pain and past trauma. Please know we are praying for you and your continued healing,” Pastor Tillman said in his statement.
