A Colorado woman has filed a federal lawsuit against Lyft, alleging that one of the company’s drivers sexually assaulted her after a ride in 2024. The suit, filed on October 21, claims that Lyft has long been aware of rampant safety issues yet failed to enact meaningful protections for passengers.
According to the complaint, Lyft’s refusal to address what it calls a “sexual predator crisis” within its driver workforce directly contributed to the woman’s assault. The filing argues that the company consistently overlooks warning signs and fails to hold dangerous drivers accountable.
Lawsuit Claims Lyft Ignored Patterns of Abuse
The lawsuit asserts that Lyft continues to hire drivers “without conducting sufficient background checks,” allows drivers accused of misconduct to stay on the platform, and has not implemented reasonable monitoring systems that could safeguard passengers—especially women.
“Lyft has been fully aware of the persistent and continuing assaults perpetrated by sexual predators driving for Lyft,” the lawsuit states.
Thousands of Reported Assaults Nationwide
Lyft’s own safety reports show nearly 7,000 sexual assaults reported by passengers or drivers between 2017 and 2022. Advocates warn that the true number is likely much higher due to underreporting—a known trend in sexual violence cases.
Colorado has seen a series of lawsuits and public incidents involving misconduct by rideshare drivers in recent years, raising concerns about industry-wide safety gaps.
