A lawsuit filed in July 2024 accused L.A. County probation officers of rape and other sexual abuse from the 1990s through 2017. One survivor who was allegedly abused while detained at Barry J. Nidorf from 2016 to 2017 said he still suffers chronic insomnia as a result of 14 months of molestation by an officer.
Nearly 600 Survivors File Claims of Sexual Abuse at L.A. County Juvenile Facilities – 2023
Multiple lawsuits have been filed on behalf of nearly 600 survivors of abuse at LA County juvenile facilities. In December 2022, 279 survivors filed suit, claiming probation and detention officers at L.A. County juvenile detention facilities, including Barry J. Nidorf in Sylmar, sexually abused them as minors between the 1970s and 2018.
The December lawsuit alleged that the county failed the minors through negligence, inadequate hiring policies, and insufficient supervision. Attorneys for the plaintiffs said the county failed to conduct proper background checks to prevent the hiring of sexual predators, and complaints of abuse at the prison were ignored.

California Laws on Sexual Abuse
In California, the statute of limitations for child sexual abuse depends on when the abuse occurred. For abuse that occurred on or after January 1, 2024, there is no time limit for child sex abuse lawsuits against perpetrators and enablers. For civil child sexual abuse that occurred before 2024, the statute of limitations gives survivors until age 40 to file a lawsuit, or within five years of discovering the abuse caused them harm.
