What is Abraxas Academy?
Abraxas Academy, located in Morgantown, Berks County, Pennsylvania, is a multi-service juvenile detention facility that provides secure residential treatment and secure detention services for male youth ages 14 to 18. The academy specializes in treating youth who have demonstrated consistent delinquent behaviors and may have serious charges.
Abraxas Academy is owned and operated by Pittsburgh-based Abraxas Youth and Family Services, a nonprofit detention, education, and counseling agency serving over 5,000 people in Colorado, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina.
Overview of Sexual Abuse Allegations at Abraxas Academy
In July 2024, three lawsuits were filed in Western Pennsylvania alleging decades of systematic sexual abuse at juvenile detention centers. The complaints were filed on behalf of 92 men and women who allegedly suffered sex abuse while housed at Abraxas Youth and Family Services and several other facilities. Thirty-three of the plaintiffs claim they were abused by guards, counselors, and other employees at Abraxas facilities.
The lawsuits describe a pattern of abuse spanning from 2000 to 2023, with allegations ranging from inappropriate strip searches to rape. The plaintiffs allege the juvenile detention facilities were aware of the culture of abuse, but looked the other way.
In early 2026, the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services revoked Abraxas Academy’s certificate of compliance to operate the facility for failing to report suspected child abuse after an incident in November 2025. The facility is a mandated reporter of abuse under Pennsylvania law. The PA DHS also alleged that the facility had failed to provide investigators with access. However, the facility can continue to operate pending appeal.
