Uber & Lyft Sexual Assault Lawyer

Over the years, there have been a few public settlements related to rideshare sexual assault.

2019 CPUC vs. Uber Lawsuit – $9M Settlement

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) initiated a significant lawsuit against Uber over its failure to report customer-reported sexual assault incidents to law enforcement. When negotiations stalled, the CPUC demanded that Uber furnish comprehensive details about the assaults, including names of involved parties and witnesses. While victim advocates were against Uber having to hand over sensitive information of private citizens who may not want to report to law enforcement, Uber’s non-compliance resulted in a $59 million fine. Eventually, Uber agreed to a $9 million settlement. 

June 2022 – $25M Lyft Settlement Citing Safety Concerns by Shareholders  

In their claim, shareholders who invested in the IPO alleged that Lyft tried to appear more socially responsible and safer than rideshare rival Uber leading up to their IPO and claimed the company failed to disclose safety concerns before going public. The lawsuit came after dozens of lawsuits were filed by against the company related to driver sexual assault and abuse just a few short months after the IPO, which shareholders felt created an “existential risk” to Lyft and that trust ands safety issues should have been disclosed in their filings.  

In June 2022, Lyft denied any wrongdoing but agreed to pay an all cash settlement of $25M to shareholders. 

November 2016 – Uber Settlement for Rideshare Sexual Assault Claim Filed by 2 Jane Does (Unknown Amount)

One of the first rideshare sexual assault lawsuits was filed in October 2015 in the US District Court in San Francisco by two unnamed women. The women claim that Uber did not do enough to protect their safety and that Uber’s “negligence,” “fraud” and “misleading statements” contributed greatly to the harm that happened to them. 

The complaint alleges that the first woman was assaulted around 2:30 am in February 2015 in Boston, when, after dropping off her friends, the Uber driver detoured off-route and sexually assaulted her; she escaped by unlocking the car door and fleeing on foot. The second woman was assaulted in August 2015 in Charleston, South Carolina, where, after her friends were dropped off, the Uber driver took her to a remote parking lot and raped her; she also escaped by fleeing on foot. In November 2016, Uber agreed to settle the case out of court and details of the settlement were kept private. 

Again, a majority of Lyft and Uber sexual assault lawsuits have either been settled outside of the public record, and are therefore not public information, or the lawsuit is ongoing and settlements are yet to be reached.
